Maths
We believe all children can achieve in mathematics and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. We use marvellous mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems. At our school, the majority of children will be taught the content from not only their year group but the year group that shares their class; this enables children to recap if needed and then be challenged when ready. They will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways. Pupil research has shown that most of our children do love maths!

WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like)
We actively promote positive learning behaviours and a growth mindset, underpinned by our shared message: “We can all do maths.” This is also highlighted in our monthly maths assemblies where we celebrate how mathematics occurs in daily life and is not just an explicit lesson. We also promote our class WAGOLLs where these expectations are achievable by every single student and can be honoured in front of the entire school.
Calculation Policy and Progression
Home Learning
Home Learning đźŹ
We encourage all children to practise their learning at home to help build confidence, develop independence and strengthen the skills they learn in school. Timestables are a vital part of learning and are the basis of our maths curriculum. Regular practise little and often can make a big difference!
Daily TTRockstars ✖️ https://play.ttrockstars.com/public
We ask that children log in to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRockstars) every day to practise their times tables and improve their speed and accuracy.
TTRockstars is an engaging, interactive online platform that helps children learn and recall their multiplication and division facts through fun, timed games and challenges. Children can earn rewards and track their progress as they practise, helping them to become more confident and fluent with their times tables. TTRockstars helps identify gaps in children’s times tables knowledge, allowing them to focus on the facts they find most challenging and make progress through targeted practice.
Maths Homework Books 📚
Children should complete their maths homework in their maths homework books, following the instructions provided by their teacher (regularly updated on Google Classroom). This is a great opportunity to practise key mathematical skills, reinforce classroom learning and develop confidence when solving problems. Please encourage your child to complete their homework carefully and return their book to school as requested.
A little practise every day goes a long way! Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home.
Science
We use a range of teaching methods in science lessons, with an emphasis on providing a curriculum which develops the children’s scientific concepts and enabling them to be curious about the world - leading to children learning to work as scientists, planning and undertaking practical investigations.
We use Developing Experts to ensure an exciting, progressive and relevant curriculum which is embeded on Google Classroom.

Computing
At Birdlip Primary we value the contribution that technology can make for the benefit of all pupils, staff, parents and governors. We strive to provide safe opportunities in all subjects to motivate and inspire pupils and raise standards across the curriculum. Everyone in our school community will become lifelong learners equipped to meet developing technology with confidence, enthusiasm and the skills that will prepare them for a future in an ever-changing world.
