Art and Design

Art and design should teach children the value of learning ownership and encourage them to explore their independent thought and ideas as well as appreciating and valuing the work of others. As pupils progress, they should begin to learn about the inter-dimensions of artistic skill and application as well as developing a critical eye for what they see. They should also understand the impact that Art has had in shaping our history, culture and the creativity of our local and wider nation.

Design & Technology

Design Technology also helps children understand the place of product design around them through historical and current developments. Its delivery ensures children also understand the need for change and development in technology over time and how it impacts on our everyday lives. We believe that a high-quality Design Technology should combine both theoretical approaches to design  with engaging, practical experiences. Children need to be immersed in interactive experiences to gage a deeper understanding of their learning as well as providing an opportunity to be motivated and inspired.

Music

Our aim is to develop musical expression from an early age and encourage children to build self-esteem through musical and performance opportunities. We begin with early skills by developing a listening ear for musical rhymes, chants and beats and as children progress, they learn more about the inter-dimensions of musical processes. In their time at Birdlip, children are exposed to a wide range of musical styles and artists to develop their critical ear and voice. Children from Year 1 have a carousel of expert class music sessions throughout the year.

Peripatetic Music Lessons

We are fortunate to have a peripatetic music teacher, Mr Parker, who is on hand to teach piano and flute to the children in weekly lessons, either 1-2-1 or in small groups.  Please contact the school office for more details.

Spanish

At Birdlip we are linguists! We want our children to love learning foreign languages. We want them to be able to use languages to ignite their curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We believe that through our school values children learn to respect other cultures, have the resilience to learn new skills and show kindness to each other and children who use other home languages and are from different cultures. At Birdlip, we have 8% of our children who are classified as EAL who speak German, Spanish, Polish and Japanese at home. We want our children to foster a love of language and have the inclination to learn a plethora of foreign languages throughout their school career and beyond.
